Pounding the Pavement at the Career Fair

Students looking for a job in their major field can avoid some heavy pavement-pounding at the Babb Center for Career Services’ all-majors Career Fair on Thursday.

The Career Fair will be 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Reynolds Room in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. It is open to all students and alumni.

“We are thrilled to once again have our All-Majors Career Fair at capacity with over 50 employers and graduate schools attending,” said Susan Krafft, Executive Director of the Babb Center. “We encourage all students to take advantage of this networking opportunity and learn about part-time, full-time, and internship opportunities.”

Students who want to be prepared for the fair can attend a prep session in person or online. The in-person session will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in room 129AB in the Campus Center. The virtual session will be noon-12:30 p.m. Wednesday on Blackboard.

The preparation sessions will cover topics including how to dress, develop your “30-second commercial,” and determine which employers to visit, and what to expect after the event.

Students do not need to be graduating or ready to begin a full-time position. Many students work part-time in their careers while they continue taking classes; many are required to complete internships while they are still taking classes. Those students will also benefit from the experience, as will those interested in continuing graduate studies. Even students who aren’t sure about their career journeys may find conversations with employers and hiring agents will clarify, or complicate (in the best way), their planning.

The Babb Center and some of the employers will have fun giveaways during the Thursday event, Krafft said. All students who attend will be entered in a drawing to win an iPad.

Krafft has a message for students: “Lions, dress for success and come ready to shake hands, showcase your skills, and make great connections!”

The presenting sponsor for the event is ArcBest; the hospitality sponsor is General Transportation.
